In Memorium: Heine Hoi Hansen, MD 1938-2011

It with deep sadness the IASLC received the message that one of its founders, Prof. Heine Hoi Hansen, passed away in Copenhagen on September 16, 2011. Prof. Hansen was instrumental in the development of the IASLC. May his legacy be a blessing for the new generation of lung cancer investigators and all the patients waiting for new developments!

A grand opportunity presents itself...
Lung cancer remains the No. 1 cancer-killer of Americans. As part of its mission, the IASLC strives to use all available means to eliminate lung cancer as a health threat for the individual patient and throughout the world. In 2009, IASLC leaders were awarded a $5.2 million Grand Opportunities Grant by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the National Cancer Institute to hold free genetic tumor screening for lung cancer patients at 13 sites across the country. Known as the Lung Cancer Mutation Consortium Protocol, the goal of the project is to assess mutations in lung adenocarcinoma tumors where oral therapies are specific, more effective and less toxic. The consortium is led by Dr. Paul A. Bunn, Jr., executive director of the IASLC and University of Colorado Cancer Center founding director. Dr. Wilbur Franklin, professor of pathology at the University of Colorado Denver and UCCC member, is the principal investigator. Patients who wish to participate in the trial should contact Mary Jackson at 303-724-1650.
