April 2013

Dear Colleagues:

The World Conference on Lung Cancer in Sydney is coming closer, October 27-30, 2013. A very exciting program has been established by the program committee and particularly the two Conference Presidents, Drs. Michael Boyer and Kwun Fong. Please note that the deadline for abstract is June 21, 2013 and we hope as many members as possible will submit abstracts. Please refer to www.iaslc.org for more information. The IASLC would like to draw your attention to the special travel awards offered to the patient advocates.

A significant step towards implementation of personalized medicine for lung cancer patients is the recent publication of the CAP/IASLC/AMP Guidelines for Molecular Testing. The IASLC is proud to be a part of this development, which should improve patient care and secure the many patients with lung cancer the most optimal therapy based on standardized and validated molecular tests. The IASLC is currently putting considerable effort into implementing these guidelines in clinical practice.

The IASLC is seeking volunteer members to serve in our committees, and this can be done through a self-nomination process.

Beginning in June, the IASLC will have the membership voting on new members for the Board of Directors and Officers. The ballot is in the process of being finalized and will be posted on our web site: www.iaslc.org very soon.

A new and improved IASLC member registration has been launched and should make the membership registration easier.

The IASLC is in the process of producing a new “Thoracic Oncology: The Multidiscplinary Approach" under the Editorship of Drs. Harvey Pass, Giorgio V. Scagliotti and David Ball. Some chapters will be completed and presented at the World Conference in Sydney, and the textbook is planned to be publically available at ASCO Annual Meeting in 2014.

Furthermore, IASLC is currently working on an ALK-Diagnostic Atlas, which will be finished and distributed at the World Conference in Sydney.

The IASLC has played a crucial role in developing the WHO/IASLC histopathological classification of lung tumors and other intra-thoracic malignant tumors. The multidisciplinary IASLC/WHO pathology panel is now planning for a new classification, which tentatively will be published in early 2015. The project is coordinated from IASLC by Dr.s William Travis, Elisabeth Brambilla and Andrew Nicholson.

For our Asian members, IASLC is proud to announce that the first Asian IASLC Office has opened in Hong-Kong and our contact person, Vengie Lau  (vengie.lau@iaslc.org), will be presented in the next Newsletter.

With best regards,
