Dear Colleagues:

Important decisions were made at the last Board of Directors meeting in California, November 1-2, 2009. After long strategic discussions and evaluation, the Board of Directors decided to establish an independent permanent headquarters established in Denver, Colorado. The Board of Directors is currently with the help of an external company planning the infrastructure necessary to operate this headquarters. The establishment of the headquarters in Denver is expected to be completed by July 2010. At the same time the Board of Directors is considering to establishing regional offices. The IASLC members can send questions, comments or concerns to the IASLC Office.

The Board of Directors wants the members to pay attention to a new round of the IASLC Fellowships/Young Investigators Awards the deadline for applications January 10, 2010 – please see announcement below.

IASLC is also proud to announce a new grant in conjunction with Lung Cancer Foundation of America (LCFA) – please see announcement below. Deadline for this grant application is January 31st, 2010.

The abstract submission to the first AACR/IASLC meeting on Molecular Origins of Lung Cancer was very successful and more than 100 abstracts were submitted. The IASLC Board of Directors has decided to launch an honorary award to be named “The Paul A. Bunn, Jr. MD Award for Translational Lung Cancer Research”.

The IASLC Board of Directors will encourage as many members as possible to submit abstracts to the ESMO IASLC meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, April 28-May 1, 2010. The deadline for abstract submission is January 13, 2010.

The IASLC Pathology Committee is currently finishing a new international multidisciplinary classification of lung adenocarcinoma. This is a work co-sponsored by the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS). The committee plans to submit the final proposal for publication in January 2010. Details of the new classification will be presented in a later newsletter.

Finally, the IASLC Board of Directors and the Executive Office wishes all the IASLC members and families Happy Holidays!
