Lectureship Awards

The IASLC Lectureship Awards recognize "rising star" IASLC members who are making outstanding contributions to the lung cancer community.

The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer at its 2022 World Conference on Lung Cancer presented awards to clinicians and researchers who made significant contributions to the fight against lung cancer. The awards represent many major categories of lung cancer research, from tumor staging to tobacco control and smoking cessation.

Lectureship awards nom 2023

The IASLC Lectureship Awards recognize IASLC members who are making outstanding contributions to the lung cancer community.  The Lectureship Awards are focused in the areas of radiation oncology, medical oncology, small cell lung cancer, nursing/allied health, translational research, thoracic surgery, staging, and tobacco control.

You may nominate up to five qualified IASLC members for each award. The deadline to nominate colleagues is Wednesday, February 1, 2023. Self-nominations are also allowed. The deadline to self-nominate and/or accept a nomination is Wednesday, February 15, 2023.

Tsuguo Naruke Lectureship Award for Surgery

Dr. Wen-Zhao Zhong is a professor at Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital, Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences, and Guangdong Lung Cancer Institute. He has an active lung surgery and research practice. He serves as the chief of surgery in the pulmonary oncology department.  

He is the Director of Guangdong Lung Cancer Institute, Director of Lung Cancer Specialist Group of Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO), Vice-Director of the Cancer Early Diagnosis and Treatment Group of Chinese Medical Association (CMA), Vice-Director of Youth Commission of Chinese Research Hospital Association (CRHA) and Broad Member of Education Committee of the International Association Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC).  

Dr. Zhong won first prize in National Thoracic Surgical Skill Competition in 2016 and second prize in International Uni-portal Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) Competition in 2016.  

He graduated from Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences in 1998 and completed his thoracic surgery training in The 3rd Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital in 2007.  

His main research interests are multidisciplinary synthetic therapy for lung cancer, early screening and diagnostic system for lung cancer, and translational implication of tumor biology. The typical clinical trials led by Dr. Zhong include CTONG 1104-ADJUVANT and CTONG 1103-EMERGING, which have evolved into a new model of perioperative targeted treatment.  

He has contributed to 6 books on cancer and published over 170 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Lancet Oncol, J Clin Oncol, Nat Commun, J Extracell Vesicles, J Thorac Oncol, etc. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.

Clifton F. Mountain Lectureship Award for Staging

Clarissa Mathias obtained her medical degree at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. She then completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, USA, where she served as Chief Resident. She completed her Hematology and Oncology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. In addition, Dr. Mathias completed a PhD in Internal Medicine at the Federal University of Bahia in 2005 and an MBA in Health Business in 2012 at Fundação Getulio Vargas.

Currently, she is Medical Director at the Núcleo de Oncologia da Bahia, part of the Oncoclinicas Group, Brazil where she is involved in several research protocols and she is the President of GBOT (Brazilian Group of Thoracic Oncology) hosted at LACOG (Latin American Cooperative Group).

Dr. Mathias is board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in Clinical Oncology by the Brazilian Society of Cancerology. She is also a member of several societies such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Brazilian Society of Cancerology and the Brazilian Society of Oncology, where she serves as General Secretary. She has co-authored several peer-reviewed papers.

Isabelle Opitz, MD

Robert J. Ginsberg Lectureship Award for Surgery

Dr. Isabelle Opitz is the director of the department of thoracic surgery at University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, and an associate professor for thoracic surgery at the University of Zurich, as well as the chair of the Lung Cancer Center in Zurich. Dr Opitz earned her MD from the Medical School University of Cologne, Germany, after which she trained in general, visceral, vascular, and thoracic surgery at Humboldt-Universität Berlin, Charité Campus Mitte, Germany. She went on to complete her general surgery residency at Cantonal Hospital Fribourg in Switzerland. She completed a clinical fellowship in thoracic surgery at the University of Toronto in Canada before taking a sabbatical for specialized training at the Marie Lannelongue Centre Chirurgical in Paris, France, in 2014.

 

Dr Opitz’s clinical interests include malignant pleural mesothelioma, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, robotic surgery, extended oncological resections, and lung transplantation. Her research interests include malignant pleural mesothelioma, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, and non-small cell lung cancer. Dr. Opitz is currently ESTS Treasurer and serves on The Annals of Thoracic Surgery Editorial Board. She also participates on the SNSF National Research Council and IICT Steering committee, ISHLT Advanced Lung Failure and Transplantation Interdisciplinary Network Steering Committee, iMig Board and Program Committee, and as a member of the IASLC Taskforce Mesothelioma.

Dr. Opitz currently lives in Zurich, Switzerland, with her husband and two children. During her free time, she enjoys a variety of sports, including yoga, Pilates, alpine skiing, swimming, and surfing.

Heine H. Hansen Lectureship Award for Small Cell Lung Cancer

Thoracic medical oncologist Stephen V. Liu, MD, is the director of Thoracic Oncology and the Head of Developmental Therapeutics at the Georgetown University Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is also an associate professor of Medicine at Georgetown University. His research focuses on rational drug development for lung cancer, and he has authored more than 150 publications.

He plays an active role in education, lectures frequently, and has won multiple teaching awards from students and trainees. He is an active member of IASLC, currently serving on the Communications Committee, as well as co-host of the official IASLC podcast, Lung Cancer Considered.

Dr. Liu received his undergraduate training at Johns Hopkins University, graduating cum laude with a major in Biology and a minor in Film & Media Studies. He earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland and received his Internal Medicine training at the University of Pennsylvania.

He completed a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine and then received further training in drug development and genomic analysis at TGen with Dr. Daniel Von Hoff. He joined the faculty of Georgetown University in 2013 and lives in Maryland with his wife, his daughter, and his dog.

Daniel C. Ihde Lectureship Award for Medical Oncology

Medical oncologist Patrick Forde was awarded the Daniel C. Ihde Lectureship Award for Medical Oncology today at the 2022 IASLC World Conference on Lung Cancer. 

He has led the development of a translational research program focused on the immuno-oncology of upper aerodigestive malignancies. Dr. Forde's research examines the role of immunotherapy for mesothelioma and lung cancer and his investigator-initiated research forms the basis for several ongoing phase 3 trials.  

In 2022, his work over several years culminated in the publication of the CheckMate 816 trial in the New England Journal of Medicine and led to the first approval of neoadjuvant chemo-immunotherapy for the treatment of surgically operable lung cancer.  

Dr. Forde is a medical oncologist who treats patients with lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other thoracic cancers. He completed training in internal medicine and oncology in Ireland before undertaking a further fellowship at Johns Hopkins.  

He is currently Co-Director of the Division of Upper Aerodigestive Malignancies in the Department of Oncology at Johns Hopkins and directs the multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Clinical Research Program.

IASLC Lectureship Award for Tobacco Control and Smoking Cessation

Dr. Ray Osarogiagbon is the Chief Scientist at Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation, Director of the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program and the Thoracic Oncology Research (ThOR) Group at the Baptist Cancer Center, Memphis, TN, and Principal Investigator of the Baptist Health System/Mid-South Minority-Underserved Consortium NCORP.  

He is Chair of the Board of Directors of the Hope Foundation for Cancer Research, a member of the NCI Cancer Prevention Steering Committee, and the Steering Committee of the National Lung Cancer Roundtable. A past Chair of the IASLC’s Membership Committee, Dr. Osarogiagbon currently co-chairs the N-Staging and the Prognostic Factors Subcommittees of the IASLC’s Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee.  

He is on the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Druckenmiller Center for Lung Cancer Research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, GO2 Foundation, Longevity Foundation, and Lung Cancer Foundation of America. He is a member of the Fleischner Society.  

2022 Lectureship Award for Radiation Oncology

James D. Cox Lectureship Award for Radiation Oncology

Dr. Yuko Nakayama is Chief of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tsukiji, Japan.   

She was promoted to Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at Gunma University, and then Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at Tokai University. Throughout her career, she has specialized in the treatment of lung cancer with (chemo) radiotherapy.   

She was appointed Chair of Radiation Oncology at Kanagawa Cancer Center (KCC) in 2008, and immediately began preparations for the construction of a carbon-ion radiotherapy facility; this facility began operation in 2015. She was in charge of both conventional photon radiotherapy as well as carbon-ion therapy at KCC.  

She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Japan Lung Cancer Society (JLCS), and has served as vice-chair and chair of the Lung Cancer Guideline Committee, and chair of the Lung Cancer Guideline Sub-Committee in the field of radiotherapy. She was also a member of the Guideline Committee of the Japanese Society of Radiation Oncology (JASTRO).   

Recently, she published a paper on the CT atlas for defining regional lymph node stations in radiotherapy for lung cancer as a member of the joint committee of JLCS and JASTRO. The standardization of radiotherapy for lung cancer is one of her life works.

IASLC Lectureship Award for Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (NAHP)

Anne Fraser is an Oncology Nurse Practitioner based at the Blood and Cancer Service at Auckland Hospital.

Since graduating as a nurse she has worked in Haematology, Stem Cell Transplant, and Oncology. She has worked with Thoracic Oncology patients since 2010 in both research and clinical practice.

Anne is a member of the International Thoracic Oncology Nurses Forum, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, where she sits on the Education Committee and the Nursing and Allied Health Committee. Anne is also the NZ representative on the Australian New Zealand Lung Cancer Nurses Forum.

Fred R. Hirsch Lectureship Award For Translational Research

Surgical pathologist Professor Lukas Bubendorf is the head of cytopathology at the Institute for Pathology of the University Hospital Basel, Switzerland and was directly involved in the invention and first validation of tissue microarray technology – a technology that has changed the landscape of pathology research. He completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the National Human Genome Research Institutes at the NIH, Bethesda, from 1998-2000. 

He is the author of more than 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals and several book chapters. His major interests and diagnostic expertise lie within thoracic pathology and uropathology, and in the general field of cytopathology.

He is a member of numerous national and international scientific societies, the Steering Committee of the ETOP Lungscape project, the IASLC Pathology Committee, and the editorial boards of several journals including Journal of Thoracic Oncology, JTO Clinical and Research Reports, Lung Cancer, Pathobiology, Journal of Molecular Pathology, Cancer Cytopathology, Diagnostic Cytopathology, and Acta Cytologica.

Prof. Bubendorf’s research group currently investigates the role of plasticity, genomic evolution, and heterogeneity in solid tumors, including lung cancer. He also aims at translating molecular techniques and assays to clinical routine applications.
