December 2006

Dear Colleagues,
The year of 2006 is soon coming to an end, and for IASLC it has been a very successful year. The Journal of Thoracic Oncology (JTO) has been launched and has developed successfully over the year. PUBMED approval is expecting to happen in early 2007 and all the published articles will then be retrospectively listed. The IASLC has added about 1000 new members within the last year. Significant new activities have been initiated including the hiring of a public relations company to help IASLC formulate and make the IASLC policy effective. Several scientifically focused meetings/workshops were held during the year with great success and the organization has expanded educational activities in South America and Asia in collaboration with local societies in harmony with the overall objectives for this global organization. After having site visited very good candidates for hosting the 14th World Conference on Lung Cancer the Board of Directors recently selected Amsterdam to host the World Conference in 2011 and preparations have already started. The IASLC Fellowship Program has expanded this year and there are now 17 fellowships in lung cancer research available (see below). The IASLC staging committee has recently finalized and submitted a proposal to UICC for a New International Staging System for Lung Cancer, a significant achievement, which effort has been chaired by Professor Peter Goldstraw, UK. The passing year also brought fruitful collaborative discussions with other major cancer organizations like American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO). Thus, the platform for fulfilling the fundamental ideas of IASLC has been solid through the past year. The IASLC Executive Office and the IASLC Board of Directors wish all the IASLC members a happy, healthy and successful year in 2007, and as an organization we are looking forward to a new year in prosperity and growth.

Best wishes for 2007
Fred R. Hirsch, MD, PhD
