February 2012

Dear Colleagues:

It is with great pride that I inform you that the IASLC Office has moved into the new IASLC Headquarters, located adjacent to the University of Colorado Hospital Campus. All employees now have new emails (first name.last and new phone numbers. The address is 13100 E Colfax Ave, Aurora, CO 80011, USA.

This year we had 26 applicants for the IASLC Fellowship/Young Investigator Awards from all the continents. The fellowship committee is currently finalizing the evaluation process and we expect to notify the applicants during March 2012.

Our scientific meetings are growing: the AACR/IASLC meeting on Molecular Origins of Lung Cancer in San Diego this year was a great success, and the most recent Targeted Therapy meeting in Santa Monica, LA was the biggest ever. The upcoming ELCC 2012 (IASLC ESMO, see below) has received more than 400 abstracts and hopefully the upcoming Latin American Lung Cancer meeting (see below) will be successful.

IASLC is rapidly expanding our Webinar series. New webinar projects including the new Adenocarcinoma classification and the clinical implication as well as a webinar on targeted therapies in lung cancer. Several others are in the planning phase.

The IASLC Board of Directors together with the IASLC staff is currently working on the implementation plan for the IASLC strategic plan, which will create the agenda for the IASLC activities for the future. Many activities are planned for the different committees, and several new committees/task forces have been established; i.e. a separate committee for patient advocates (as well as advocate representation on other committees). A task force has been established to explore how IASLC and industry partners can better interact mutually in future IASLC activities. Several initiatives will be implemented for

increasing our membership and the IASLC BOD has approved reduced membership fees for certain developing countries.

Finally, our journal “Journal of Thoracic Oncology” has developed tremendously over the first 5 years, mainly due to the work of our visionary Chief Editor James Jett, MD. However, Dr. Jett has decided to retire from this post December 31, 2012 and a search process for a new Editor has been initiated.

IASLC has introduced new educational programs on its Web site ( for its members and for healthcare professionals who are managing patients with lung cancer. The first program titled, “New Developments in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer” features Professor Peter Goldstraw, MD, in a two-part presentation, that reviews the fundamentals of the new lung cancer staging system and examines the role of the TNM staging system of patients with small-cell lung cancer. The new, updated IASLC nodal staging map is also reviewed. In another presentation, Paul Bunn, Jr, MD, addresses the incorporation of molecular testing into the standard diagnostic workup of patients with NSCLC, and the selection of appropriate treatment for patients. The program concludes with case-study presentations by Drs. Bunn and Harvey I. Pass, illustrating the use of the new staging system and molecular testing.
