Membership

June 2011

Dear Colleagues:
We have just finalized the results from the IASLC election of new members for the IASLC Board of Directors, and the results show a strong and broad representative new BOD, which will take office after the World Conference in Amsterdam. The voting percent of 56 among our members is the highest in IASLC history – and much higher than in many other large comparative organizations, which reflects a high engagement in our organization.
The New IASLC Bylaws passed the recent vote of the members.
The World Conference is only a few weeks away and we have a record of about 1900 abstracts to be presented. The registration of participants exceeds expectations, and we encourage as many of our members as possible to make their registration ASAP.
The selection process for hosting the World Conference in 2017 (Europe) is ongoing and the result will be announced during the Amsterdam conference in July 2011.
IASLC is preparing for renewals in our many committees, and we would like to encourage members to consider nominations to the different committees (see below). The different committees are found on our website www.iaslc.org
The IASLC BOD is currently preparing for a Strategic Planning meeting in September 2011. The whole organization’s structure and future strategies will be extensively discussed over a 2-day meeting. Several months of preparation facilitated by a professional company have preceded this meeting.
Most of the IASLC Members are preparing or enjoying the summer season. The IASLC BOD and Executive Office would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy summer vacation, and we hope to see as many as possible in Amsterdam for the World Conference.

IALSC New Board Members:

2011 Board

IASLC New Committee members:

The board is undertaking a comprehensive strategic review which will look at the functions and composition of the present standing and ad hoc committees. As the organization is expanding it is increasingly difficult for board members to remain aware of the competencies of members around the globe. We are therefore proposing to invite self-nominations from members. Nominations should state the committee preferred by the applicant, the experience and knowledge they could bring to this role and be supported by at least one other member of the IASLC, preferably the Regent for their region. The President and board will select successful applicants to ensure appropriate geographical and specialty mix. If you, or a colleague, would like to contribute to this important work, send applications to Pia Hirsch by email, pia.Hirsch@ucdenver.edu before the end of August. Further details on the committees are available on the IASLC web site www.iaslc.org.

New for 2011—IASLC Web-based Education Programs
Starting January 2011, IASLC is introducing new educational programs for its members and for healthcare professionals who are managing patients with lung cancer. The first program titled, “New Developments in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer” features Professor Peter Goldstraw, MD, in a two-part presentation, that reviews the fundamentals of the new lung cancer staging system and examines the role of the TNM staging system of patients with small-cell lung cancer. The new, updated IASLC nodal staging map is also reviewed. In another presentation, Paul Bunn, Jr, MD, address the incorporation of molecular testing into the standard diagnostic workup of patients with NSCLC, and the selection of appropriate treatment for patients. The program concludes with case-study presentations by Drs. Bunn and Harvey I. Pass, illustrating the use of the new staging system and molecular testing.

ASLC Staging Manual:

The IASLC Staging Manual and Handbook in Thoracic Oncologic has now surpassed 35,000 copies sold worldwide. In addition, the Staging Posters and Reference Cards continue to be popular reference aids of the 7th edition staging system for practitioners and tumor boards. IASLC members can continue to order these publications and products at special member pricing (www.iaslcpubs.org; contact info@iaslc-staging.org for further information).

In addition, translations of these publications have been completed or are in process in multiple languages: Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Polish, and Turkish. Discussions about future translations in Spanish, Arabic, and Russian are ongoing.

iPhone/iPAD Staging Atlas

The new IASLC Staging Manual has been published in different formats. Several years of work from the IASLC Staging Committee and particularly the chair Dr. Peter Goldstraw, has resulted in a formal staging manual. The book and the “pocket-cards” can be ordered at www.iaslc.org
