June 2013

Dear Colleagues:

Election of IASLC officers and members of the Board of Directors are ongoing and the deadline is July 16, 2013.

The World Conference on Lung Cancer in Sydney is coming closer - October 27-30, 2013. A record high number, more than 2,300, of abstracts have been received for the conference and will now be evaluated by the Program Committee. Notification to the abstract authors is scheduled to July 26, 2013. Please, take advantage of the early registration with the deadline of August 2, 2013.

The IASLC is launching a new program, the “Best of WCLC”, this year. These will be arranged 1-3 months after the WCLC at 12 different locations, including all the geographic regions.

An extended IASLC Pathology Committee is currently developing an “IASLC ALK ATLAS”, edited by Drs. Ming S. Tsao, Fred R. Hirsch and Yasushi Yatabe. The Atlas will be distributed for members at the WLCC in Sydney and will include both descriptions of methodologies, references and most of all an extended collection and
images describing the different patterns of ALK-gene rearrangements detected by the different diagnostic platforms.

As previous announced IASLC is celebrating the 40-year Anniversary in 2014. Preparation for that milestone is already ongoing. A 40-year IASLC Monograph is
currently being prepared by a committee, which also will include a detailed history of developments in lung cancer biology and treatments over the last 40 years.

The Journal of Thoracic Oncology continues its success. The impact factor for 2012 has just been released and shows JTO has risen to 4.5. Congratulations to our Editors and Associate Editors.

We would like to remind our members of the membership opportunity for fellows and encourage Fellows to become members of IASLC for FREE for the first 2 years – see below.

For those for whom it is geographical relevant, the IASLC Board of Directors and the staff want to wish all the IASLC members a happy and healthy summer season!

With best regards,

Fred R. Hirsch, MD, PhD, Editor IASLC Newsletter

Free IASLC membership for Fellows, Residents or Trainees

As you may already be aware of the IASLC offers free membership to fellows for 2 years, but we want to make sure that more trainees around the world in multiple specialties are taking advantage of membership. Because of the importance of young investigators to the future of lung cancer research, fellows, residents and trainees may apply for free, non-voting membership by submitting a signed letter stating the term dates of their fellowship, residency or proof of trainee status from their department.

The free memberships are entitled to many IASLC benefits including online access to the Journal of Thoracic Oncology (JTO). Once you enter your colleague's name and email address, an email will be sent inviting them to join IASLC on your behalf. Thank you for your membership in IASLC and your help growing our global team! Update Regarding 2013 Member Renewal

IASLC has launched a new online member registration system for 2013 and all members will have received an email with renewal instructions by January 31st. If you do not receive the email, you may pay dues directly at www.iaslc.org/membership, or please email membership@iaslc.org with any questions. The new system is designed to be easier for you to renew your membership with IASLC, while also providing important updated and complete information for IASLC. It is increasingly important that are able to contact you in the event your professional location changes or if your institution’s email security prevents our communications from reaching you, so we have updated certain required fields during registration. To renew now, please visit the following link: www.iaslc.org/membership

Members will be able to renew instantly online via credit card, or you can create a custom invoice after confirming your contact details. Also, in order to improve the services we can provide you, we are currently renovating the existing member website and it will be temporarily unavailable. The 2012 Online Member Directory is still available to members at a private website address. If you need to have the Online Member Directory link emailed to you again, please email membership@iaslc.org. Once the new site, features, and 2013 Member Directory are available, we will notify members directly. NOTE to American Express users: Due to certain individual security settings that may be activated on your card, you may need to confirm directly with Amex that the transaction with IASLC is intended. Thank you for your membership in IASLC.

CAP/IASLC/AMP Guidelines

The Molecular Testing Guideline for Selection of Lung Cancer Patients for EGFR and ALK Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors has been a joint effort between the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the IALSC and the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP). The Guidelines are released on the IASLC and JTO websites early April. A webcast with the lead authors and co-chairs of the Guideline will be given in late April. IASLC 40th Anniversary Professor Heine H. Hansen Fellowship

As we embark on the next 40 years of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, we pause to celebrate the past 40 years. The IASLC Board of Directors commemorates this notable time in the IASLC history by a 40th Anniversary Campaign to raise money for an additional fellowship in order to strengthen our education of the next generation lung cancer investigators. This fellowship will be named in Professor Heine H. Hansen’s honor. Professor Hansen was instrumental in the development of the IASLC. He was Congress President of the 2nd World Conference on Lung Cancer in Copenhagen in 1980. He served on the Board of Directors from 1985 to 1994 and served as the President from 1988-1991. Prof. Hansen was the first Executive Director of the IASLC (1991-2001) and was also the founder of the first IASLC journal Lung Cancer in 1985. He was a leader in developing international guidelines for the staging and treatment of small cell lung cancer and arranged many international workshops in this field. He received the IASLC Merit Award in 1997 and became the first Honorary Member in 2003. The IASLC fellowships benefit young researchers with the intention of encouraging innovative research in lung cancer prevention and translational medicine worldwide. Board members have made significant contributions to kick off this campaign. Please show your commitment to the IASLC 40th Anniversary Campaign by contributing to the Professor Heine H. Hansen Fellowship.
