GAIN is an interdisciplinary summit that seeks to address clinical gaps in the diagnosis and care of patients with locally advanced and metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The goal is to improve performance of a team of specialists who are responsible for appropriate staging, mediastinal lymph node assessment, tissue acquisition, biomarker analysis and immunotherapy in patients with NSCLC. Low pre-surgery uptake of a labeled glucose analogue, a marker of metabolic activity, in the primary tumor of patients with stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is associated with increased overall survival and a longer time before tumor recurrence. Patients with high labeled glucose uptake may benefit from additional therapy following surgery. | More
The German Lung Cancer Screening Intervention Trial (LUSI) shows that the early repeat scan rate for suspicious findings decreased by more than 80% with the second and subsequent low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screens, but emphasizes the need to have an organized screening program with the baseline scan available for comparison. | More
Concurrent chemoradiation treatment at high-volume facilities improves survival for non-small cell lung cancer patients.
Patients treated with definitive concurrent chemotherapy and radiation therapy (CCRT) for stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have longer overall survival when treated by highly experienced facilities, whether or not they are academic or community cancer centers. | More
Update from North American Regents: Heather Wakelee, Gail Darling (Regent Chair), MD, FRCSC, FACS
With the April 15th deadline looming, not just for taxes in the United States, but also for the IASLC WCLC abstracts, times are busy for those of us in North America. We anticipate a very high turnout at the WCLC in Denver and hope to inspire many junior investigators from diverse fields to attend. WCLC will be a wonderful way for pulmonary medicine, pathology, radiology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, thoracic surgery and other trainees to present their work and be inspired by the tremendous advances and remaining opportunities to improve our understanding of and treatments for lung cancer. Remember, IASLC membership is free for fellows, residents and trainees! Please invite a Fellow, Resident or Trainee today!
Group fellow membership registration is possible if you’d like to enroll a number of trainees at once: Click Here for Program Details and Application Form.
