Deniz Yalman, MD, PhD
Message to Region: (READ IT IN TURKISH)
One of the priority tasks of Turkish Society of Lung Cancer is to increase lung cancer awareness among Turkish citizens. The society faces the same problems like many developed and developing countries in the scope of lung cancer . The society organized three workshops during November 2013 in order to increase the awareness, to manufacture public opinion and to motivate those who have great impact on policy making. Many issues and problems regarding the role of screening in early diagnosis, palliative care, and drug accessibility for lung cancer patients were discussed and suggestions for the solution of these problems were shared with the colleagues, policy makers, and public. In order to share the current knowledge on lung cancer 12 regional meetings besides a national congress with 450 participants were organized during 2014. It is planned to increase the number of regional meetings during 2015.
Another interesting issue for the public is lung cancer vaccines. To prevent the excess and premature interest which may arise from visual and printed media Turkish Society of Lung Cancer gave importance to inform our colleagues and public about immunotherapy.
For the first time Republic of Turkey Ministery of Health, Cancer Research Center announced the survival statistics of all cancer sites. According to these statistics mean survival duration of lung cancer cases (ignoring the stage) is 16.8 months.
The precautions against tobacco and tobacco products are still ongoing incrementally. This should be interpreted as an indication that Turkey will show a great progress in the fight against tobacco related diseases in the near future.

Awardees receive a travel stipend, free conference registration, up to four nights’ accommodations, and a free IASLC Membership for 2016. “For the World Conference on Lung Cancer in 2015, we hope to engage and receive more applications from other regions of the world, including Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. We know that the cost of travel can be a deterrent, and we hope these travel awards will encourage more survivors and patient advocates from around the world to apply” says Glenda Colburn, chair of the IASLC Patient Advocacy Committee and a Director at Lung Foundation Australia.
