Welcome New IASLC Members for October:
Regent Names: Norihiko Ikeda, MD, PhD – Thoracic Surgery (Tokyo Medical University, Tokyo, Japan) and Shuji Sakai, MD – Radiation Oncology (Tokyo Women’s Medical University, Tokyo, Japan)
Region Covered: Japan
The IASLC has historically had strong membership from Japan, and there is a strong partnership between IASLC and the Japan Lung Cancer Society (JLCS). Staff from the Tokyo Medical University assist JLCS members with IASLC membership administration, translations, and other communications. In partnership with JLCS, IASLC offers JLCS members who are new to IASLC a special introductory membership rate of $125.00, which is half off the Regular membership rate.
The JLCS, founded in 1960 and with 7,400 members, is the Japanese organization most related to the IASLC in Japan. There are currently over 650 IASLC members in Japan and the JLCS encourages members to participate in the IASLC and its activities. The IASLC newsletter is translated into Japanese by a dedicated JLCS committee and distributed to all JLCS members with registered e-mail addresses. Also, IASLC Workshops have frequently been held during the Annual Meetings of the JLCS, and guest speakers are selected from among members of the IASLC Board or other outstanding members of the IASLC. The Boards of both organizations, Regents of the IASLC in conjunction with the International Committee of the JLCS attract Japanese lung cancer specialists to participate in IASLC by officially explaining the various advantages of IASLC membership and encourage them to attend the WCLC.
The 55th Annual Meeting of the Japan Lung Cancer Society is to take place in Kyoto, Japan on November 14-16, 2014. If members in Japan have any questions, they may contact IASLC Regents Norihiko Ikeda (firstname.lastname@example.org), Shuji Sakai (email@example.com), Yoshimi Hirose (firstname.lastname@example.org) or IASLC Membership (email@example.com).
WCLC 2015: Patient Advocacy Travel Awards
The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) has opened the application process for lung cancer patient advocates to apply for Advocacy Travel Awards. Awardees receive a travel stipend, free conference registration, up to four nights’ accommodations, and a free IASLC Membership for 2016. “For the World Conference on Lung Cancer in 2015, we hope to engage and receive more applications from other regions of the world, including Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. We know that the cost of travel can be a deterrent, and we hope these travel awards will encourage more survivors and patient advocates from around the world to apply” says Glenda Colburn, chair of the IASLC Patient Advocacy Committee and a Director at Lung Foundation Australia.
