IASLC Supports Mesothelioma Awareness Day
IASLC Working to Bring Greater Awareness to this Rare Form of Cancer

DENVER – Malignant mesothelioma is a form of cancer that invades the lining of the lung or chest cavity and is often caused by exposure to carcinogenic mineral fibers such as asbestos and erionite (a natural mineral found in volcanic ash). The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) is joining other organizations in support of Mesothelioma Awareness Day on September 26 to raise greater public awareness for this disease.

“Mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive, and painful type of cancer, which deserves greater levels of funding and research. IASLC is leveraging its global perspective and multidisciplinary resources to join in the efforts of other organizations to use all available means to improve mesothelioma treatment and care. We want to help ease the burden of those affected by this challenging disease,” said Fred R. Hirsch, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Pathology at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and School of Medicine, and CEO of the IASLC.

The IASLC is actively working to bring greater awareness to this disease, and to lay the foundation for greater understanding and treatment. For instance, the IASLC and the International Mesothelioma Interest Group (IMIG) staging system for pleural mesothelioma has been recently revised to improve staging of this rare disease. The IASLC has convened an official Mesothelioma Task Force, which is currently working on a set of six review articles and a webinar series related to mesothelioma. The IASLC will also host a mesothelioma workshop at the IASLC 17th World Conference on Lung Cancer. The conference will be held December 4-7, 2016 in Vienna, Austria, and the mesothelioma workshop will take place on December 7.

Finally, the Journal of Thoracic Oncology (JTO), the official journal of the IASLC, today published online four articles related to mesothelioma staging. The following articles are now available to read on the JTO website:

Currently, over 20 million people in the US are at risk of developing mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure, and more due to exposure to other mineral fibers. Mortality rates are estimated to increase by 5-10% per year in most industrialized countries until about 2020 due to past exposure.
