DENVER – The members of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) support tobacco control and smoking cessation efforts across the globe. An editorial published July 20, 2013 in the medical journal Lancet suggests that the government in the United Kingdom has chosen not to pursue standardized packaging because of financial considerations. The editorial suggests that the government in the United Kingdom has sold out to the lobbying interests of major tobacco.

The members of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) have selected their new Officers and Board of Directors. The new board members have 151 combined years involved in the IASLC and more than 250 years of experience in lung cancer research. David Carbone, MD, PhD, professor of Internal Medicine and director of the James Thoracic Center at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, was elected President. He will serve as President-Elect until his term as President begins in 2015. David Gandara, MD, professor of Medicine at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, was elected Treasurer.

The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) supports the draft lung cancer screening recommendations released by the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force. The Task Force announced Monday its draft recommendation statement on computed tomography (CT) screening.

Election of IASLC officers and members of the Board of Directors are ongoing and the deadline is July 16, 2013.

The World Conference on Lung Cancer in Sydney is coming closer - October 27-30, 2013. A record high number, more than 2,300, of abstracts have been received for the conference and will now be evaluated by the Program Committee. Notification to the abstract authors is scheduled to July 26, 2013. Please, take advantage of the early registration with the deadline of August 2, 2013.
