During this one hour webinar, Professor Opitz will review current standards for patient selection for surgery in multimodality treatment concepts. The implications of staging and prognostic scores will be discussed. Surgical techniques, issues and controversies will be addressed - as will short-term and long-term outcomes.

Following the presentation, there will be ample time for discussion and questions. Questions and comments can be submitted to Professor Opitz via internet chat.

Participants who complete a post-test along with an evaluation will receive 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM for each completed webinar.  

Goal & Purpose of this activity is to: Identify and discuss recent data and current clinical research evaluating the role of surgery in the treatment of malignant mesothelioma (“MM”). To Assess the utility of new staging procedures and prognostic scoring for patient selection for surgery and facilitate the exchange of data and information relative to the multi-disciplinary management of patients.

OBJECTIVES:

After attending this activity participant will be able to:

  • Provide an update on patient selection, surgical techniques, and staging procedures to support the role of surgery in the multi-modal treatment of malignant mesothelioma.
  • Discuss the incorporation of surgery into treatment paradigms.
  • Identify ongoing clinical trials that are likely to impact patient care in the near future.

DEFINITION OF A COMMERCIAL INTEREST: A commercial interest is any entity producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients.

DEFINITION OF CME

Continuing medical education consists of educational activities which serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships that a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession. The content of CME is that body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of health care to the public.

Financial/Commercial Relationships DISCLOSURES

A conflict of interest (COI) is created and exists when individuals in a position to control the content of CME (or their spouses/partners) have a relevant personal financial relationship within the past 12 months with a commercial interest that produces, markets, re-sells or distributes health care goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients that benefits the individual in any financial amount and therefore may bias their opinions and teachings. This may include receiving a salary, royalty, intellectual property rights, consulting fee, honoraria, ownership interest (e.g., stocks, stock options or other ownership interest, excluding diversified mutual funds) or any other financial benefit. Financial benefits are usually associated with roles such as employment, management position, independent contractor (including contracted research and clinical trials), consulting, speaking and teaching, membership on advisory committees or review panels, board membership and other activities for which remuneration is received or expected. 

This IASLC CME educational activity was planned and developed to: uphold academic standards to ensure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor; adhere to requirements to protect health information under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA); and include a mechanism to inform learners when unapproved or unlabeled uses of therapeutic products or agents are discussed or referenced.

IASLC CME Office assures that the planners/reviewers/authors/faculty/peer reviewers et al. conflicts of interest were identified, reviewed and resolved fromall individuals involved in the development or able to influence and control the content of this CME activity.
