Rare Tumors Committee

The Rare Tumors Committee is a specialized committee established to address the unique challenges and needs of patients and healthcare professionals dealing with rare thoracic malignancies worldwide.

Nominations are open to members interested in SCLC for the SCLC subcommittee and members interested in thymic malignancies for the thymic malignancy subcommittee. This committee will also be accepting nominations for the Committee Chair position. Members of the 2023-2025 Mesothelioma Committee are automatically members of the Mesothelioma subcommittee, and no other members are required at this time.

Overview

Committee Responsibilities:

  1. Research: The committee is responsible for encouraging and facilitating research on rare thoracic tumors. They collaborate with leading institutions to tackle key scientific questions. Through scientific publications, whitepapers, and online platforms, the committee ensures that the latest advancements and discoveries related to rare thoracic tumors are accessible to the global medical community and the public.  
  2. Education: The committee is committed to developing educational programs and training materials for our members, nonmembers, patients and the public about the relevant aspects of the biology of these diseases, prevention strategies, accurate diagnosis, and effective management of rare thoracic malignancies. This includes organizing workshops, webinars, and other educational deliverables to disseminate knowledge and share best practices.  
  3. Collaboration: The committee facilitates cross-commitment and global collaboration among experts, researchers, and advocacy groups, fostering partnerships that can accelerate progress in the field. They promote international knowledge exchange and collaboration, encouraging multidisciplinary approaches to tackle rare thoracic tumors effectively.  
  4. Career Training: The committee is dedicated to training the next generation of rare tumor experts and supporting investigators across the career continuum.  
Mission

The committee aims to foster collaboration, diverse research, education and career development on rare tumors such as small cell, mesothelioma, and thymic cancers. By pooling expertise and resources, the committee strives to improve outcomes, raise awareness, and promote advancements in the understanding and management of these less common but often aggressive cancers.
